A lyrical journey through a day of Australian birdlife.
Kookaburra Kookaburra begins with the morning call of the kookaburra and ends with a goodnight from the boobook owl. Along the way, readers are introduced to 12 of Australia’s most iconic birds, each accompanied by a short rhyme and a linoprinted illustration.
Ideal for children aged 2-8, this book encourages engagement with the natural world through rhythm, recognition, and visual storytelling. A gentle introduction to native bird species and the art of noticing.
At the back, you’ll find a brief description of each bird featured.
Illustrated using bold linoprint techniques, printed on recycled stock and self-published under Bridget’s Black Cockatoo Books label.

About the Author
Bridget Farmer
Originally from Northern Ireland, Bridget attended art college in Scotland, studying jewellery, before coming to Australia in 2005. Initially Bridget came over to visit friends but fell in love with the country (and a certain Australian man) and stayed much longer than she expected.
On arrival in Australia Bridget attended a weekend printmaking course and the technique just clicked for her. It was a natural continuation of Bridget's love of drawing.
Bridget has always been interested in birds. Upon arrival in Australia, Bridget felt like she was in a new world, very far from home, mostly because of the birds. "I didn’t quite believe my friends when they told me about swooping magpies! After constant questions of 'What’s that bird? oooh! What’s that one?'" Bridget's friends gifted her an Australian bird book and she set about familiarising herself with all the exotic species. Bridget uses birds as her inspiration for her creations and says "it is my way of continuing to learn about them. There’s so much more to know!"
Now, she calls Guildford in country Victoria home with her musician husband, two young sons, Viktor the little black griffon and a whole flock of chickens.
